What is The Placenta?
The placenta is an “immune-privileged” tissue that protects the developing fetus in the mother’s womb. In addition to possessing special characteristics as a result of its “immune-privileged” status the placenta tissue is rich with stem cells.
Which Stem Cells Does The Placenta Tissue Contain?
As a source of stem cells, the placenta is unique because it is found to contain both Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). HSCs are found in the umbilical cord blood or bone marrow. MSCs are found in the umbilical cord tissue. It is unique to find both MSCs and HSCs in one source. The placenta also contains Pluripotent stem cells which have the potential to differentiate into almost any cell within the body. All three cell types are currently the subject of dozens of ongoing clinical trials.
