What types of stem cells can be collected for Cord Blood Banking?
There are two types of stem cells that can be collected from cord blood and tissue banking. They are called hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and Meschymal Stem cells (MSCs). HSCs are found in umbilical cord blood. MSCs are found in umbilical cord tissue. HSCs can treat more than 80 blood related disorders and diseases. MSCs are currently being used in more than 50 clinical trials. They can be used to treat any muscles, skin, cartilage, bone, or fat component of the body. What is extra special about MSCs is the fact that they can regenerate, creating multiple opportunities for use. Many expectant parents opt to bank their baby’s HSCs and MSCs as an insurance policy.
